What are One-Step Division Equations?

A One-Step Division Equation is a type of equation where the operation involved is division, and solving the equation requires only one operation. The goal is to find the value of the variable (usually represented as x).

Example:

Consider the equation:

x = 8
3

In this equation, x is being divided by 3, and we need to find the value of x that makes the equation true.

Process of Finding the Solution:

  1. Understand the equation:
    • x is the unknown number.
    • Dividing x by 3 gives 8.
  2. Undo the division:
    • To solve for x, you need to undo the division by performing the opposite operation, which is multiplication. This step isolates the variable.
    • Multiply both sides of the equation by 3:

      x · 3 = 8 · 3
      3

      Simplifying this gives:

      x = 24

  3. Check your solution:
    • Substitute x = 24 back into the original equation to verify:

      24 = 8
      3

      8 = 8

    Since both sides are equal, your solution is correct!

Key Concept

Although the equation involves division, you solve it by performing the opposite operation (multiplication) to isolate the variable. It's called a One-Step Equation because only one operation (multiplication in this case) is required to find the solution.
