About Fractions

Fractions are a way to represent parts of a whole. A fraction consists of two parts: the numerator and the denominator.

  1. Numerator: This is the top part of the fraction. It indicates how many parts of the whole are being considered.
  2. Denominator: This is the bottom part of the fraction. It indicates the total number of equal parts into which the whole is divided.

For example, in the fraction ¾:

  • The numerator is 3. This tells us that we are considering 3 parts.
  • The denominator is 4. This tells us that the whole is divided into 4 equal parts.

So, ¾ represents three out of four equal parts of the whole.

Imagine a pizza cut into 4 equal slices: If you have 3 out of those 4 slices, you have ¾ (i.e. three quarters) of the pizza.
