Understanding Percentages

A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. It is denoted using the symbol "%". For example, 25% means 25 out of every 100, or 25/100.

Different Percentages of a Whole

When you take different percentages of the same whole, you are dividing that whole into different parts according to the specified percentages. For instance, if you have a whole that represents 100%:

  • 25% of the whole means you are taking 25 out of 100 parts.
  • 50% of the whole means you are taking 50 out of 100 parts.
  • 75% of the whole means you are taking 75 out of 100 parts.

For example, imagine you have a pizza cut into 100 slices:

  • 25% of the pizza would be 25 slices.
  • 50% of the pizza would be 50 slices.
  • 75% of the pizza would be 75 slices.

The Same Percentage of Different Wholes

When you take the same percentage of different wholes, the actual amount represented by that percentage will vary depending on the size of the whole. For example, if you take 25% of different wholes:

  • 25% of a whole that is 100 units is 25 units (25% of 100 is 25).
  • 25% of a whole that is 200 units is 50 units (25% of 200 is 50).
  • 25% of a whole that is 400 units is 100 units (25% of 400 is 100).

For example, if you have different-sized pizzas:

  • A small pizza with 100 slices: 25% of this pizza is 25 slices.
  • A medium pizza with 200 slices: 25% of this pizza is 50 slices.
  • A large pizza with 400 slices: 25% of this pizza is 100 slices.
